Eco - WEEE

What is WEEE?

On the 2 January 2007 the UK Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations came into force. WEEE is a new piece of producer responsibility legislation which aims to reduce the amount of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) ending up in landfill. Instead the regulations require the collection, treatment, recycling and environmentally sound disposal of WEEE. The regulations affect all brand owners, importers and distributors or retailers of EEE.

Distributors supplying new EEE have to ensure that WEEE from private households can be returned, free of charge, on a one-for-one, like for like basis.

Distributors supplying new EEE to private households are obligated to inform householders about:

  • the need for separate collection of WEEE, and the high collection rates of WEEE for treatment, recovery and environmentally sound disposal

  • facilities available for the disposal of WEEE

  • their role in contributing to the reuse, recycling and other forms of recovery of WEEE under the WEEE regulations

  • the potential impact to the environment and to human health, of hazardous substances contained within WEEE

  • the meaning of the crossed out wheelie bin symbol

Ecodigital takes its obligations seriously and as online seller of electrical goods has chosen to join a scheme where by a financial contribution is made by our company to fund the safe disposal of electrical goods in respect of WEEE regulations. It is not practical for us as an online retailer to operate a take back system for old electrical goods so this fully approved scheme run by VALPAK is the best way for Ecodigital to meet its responsibilities.
